The Ultimate Guide To A Good Night’s Sleep….Naturally

 In Interviews

I don’t know about you guys but I CAN’T SLEEP. I’ve never been a good sleeper, and I remember when I was going through treatment it was especially challenging.  Then you throw this pandemic on top of it all…let’s just say that I don’t think anyone is getting their best “Z”s” right now. I had a pretty good handle on in, then I started to “catch up” on the news at night. Not a good idea.  Rather than continue on my path and wake up feeling less than refreshed (which makes it difficult to exercise or stay focused throughout the day), I decided to do some research on how to get a good night’s sleep naturally.  Say buh-bye to Nyquil and hello to natural sleep therapies!

ROLLING IN THE SLEEP

First things first. Check out the “Dream” hemp-infused roller from Ami Wellness.

I’ll tell you right now, this is the best $39 you’ll ever spend on a good night’s sleep. This nightstand essential is a therapeutic blend of valerian root, hops humulus and full-spectrum hemp cannabinoids that will help relax your mind & recharge your body. Roll it on, drift off & wake up shining. Check with your doctor of course if you’re currently in treatment, but the next time someone asks what they can get you…tell them you need some “Dream” in your life!

I also asked Triniti Gawthrop, the Founder of Ami Wellness to share some of her sleep tips with us (below). “My sleep stealers are stress and seasonal changes, so adding our Dream and Calm tinctures to water 30 minutes before bed has really helped me.”

– Lack of sleep increases leptin which is a hormone that triggers hunger- so not sleeping increases your appetite
– Adults generally need 7 to 9 hrs of sleep per night, but some function well with as little as 6 hours per night
– Interested in a sleep tracker app? WireCutter recommends SleepScore as the best sleep tracker app of 2020, and users that use Dream along with a sleep tracker have told us that Dream increases REM sleep for them!
– Melatonin is not meant for long term use. It’s a hormone that your body makes to regulate sleep. Many doctors are uncomfortable with the long term use of Melatonin, especially in children
– Seasonal affective disorder is often accompanied by sleep disturbances
– Increase in age is matched with an increase in sleeplessness
– Stress increases insomnia
– The two sleepiest times of day are 2am and 2pm

Thank you Triniti for these amazing facts and tips, I’m going to pin these to my bedroom wall!

A SLEEP MASK FIT FOR A GODDESS
Check out this Amethyst Crystal Eye Mask by Energy Muse ($74.95). How could you not feel like a sleep goddess when you put slip this magical mask on? In case you haven’t noticed, this isn’t your average eye mask. It works by infusing your mind, body, and spirit with Amethyst properties. As a stone of peace, Amethyst clears your energy of any tension, worry, or stress so you can get back to a calm state of being. The Amethyst properties are enhanced by the weight of the eye mask, which grounds your energy and requires you to find stillness. In that moment of stillness, you can reconnect to your sense of inner peace. Lay this Amethyst eye mask over your eyes to calm your mind. The peaceful energy of the crystals and the weight of the eye mask will guide you to a state of relaxation.  Not sure what to get a friend of yours who has been recently diagnose? This makes an amazing gift…or girl, just get it for yourself. You know I’m all about self-gifting.

LET’S GET STONED
If you’re tired of being tired, take a close look at the Restful Sleep Stones Bag ($12.95, by Energy Muse). These crystals are especially suited to calming and cleansing the mind that’s full of anxieties, thoughts or fears. So when you’re ready for some sweet shut-eye, grab your sleep stones before heading off to bed. These also come in handy for a quick meditation, especially the day before a test, treatment or scan. This set contains 2 Selenite stones, 2 Amethyst stones and 1 Labradorite stone.
PILLOW TALK
When it comes to pillows, I have two words for you: Billow Pillow ($200). The patented Billow Pillow is a luxurious and functional post-op pillow that provides relief and comfort from breast surgery (including mastectomy, reconstructive, augmentation or reduction). It’s ergonomically designed for strategic body positioning that results in ideal breast, back, under arm and neck support.
It also provides support to the neck and shoulder while lying on your side  great news for side-sleepers). Choice of Wool ($210) or Kapok filled pillow ($200). Always cruelty-free and not treated with chemical pesticides or synthetic fertilizers. Includes a luxurious and organic count sateen cotton and machine washable Billow case.
Bonus: Here’s a brief video that shows how the Billow is used and how it can support the body post-surgery.

SPOIL YOURSELF
I’m a huge advocate of silk or satin pillowcases, especially when you’re losing your hair as a result of chemotherapy. I’m 7 years out from treatment and I STILL love a satin or silk pillowcase. We could all use a good night of sleep, now more than ever! Celestial Silks 25 momme pure mulberry silk pillowcase is thicker, more durable and more luxurious than lighter weight ones. It comes with either a zipper enclosure to keep the pillow fully protected, or the more traditional envelope style with a hidden flap that tucks around the side of the pillow.

Celestial Silk pillowcases regulate body temperature to keep you warm in the winter and cool in the summer, and are naturally hypoallergenic to repel common allergens. Silk offers beauty and hair benefits. Why? Because it’s gentle on your skin and protects your hair from frizz and static. Select from standard, queen and king sizes in a variety of beautiful colors and prints. Retail price: $36-38.99. They’re also a bestseller on Amazon.

SOUND SPA

Last but certainly not least, take a close look at this Homedic Sound Spa which can be purchased on Amazon for just under $20.

It’s got 6 soothing sounds: White Noise, Thunder, Ocean, Rain, Summer Night, and Brook; The Soundspa’s sounds are designed to mimic the natural environment to provide the most relaxing experience possible. And it’s not just for bedtime. You can use it when studying, traveling or for meditation.  You can play the relaxation sounds continuously, or set the timer.  The timer features 3 options: 15, 30, or 60 minutes. It can be plugged into a wall outlet with the adapter (included) or you can power it up with  4 ‘AA’ batteries (not included). Another great suggestion when someone asks what you need!

So that’s my, “Ultimate Guide To A Good Night’s Sleep….Naturally.” It’s not easy to break bad habits like scrolling through social media right before you shut the lights off (I do it too!), but now is a great time to implement some structure into your sleep routine. You can even use some of the items above as rewards for improving your bedtime routine. Now, get off your phone and get some Zzzz’s.
