Releasing My Inner Goddess with Boudoir Photographer Jen Rozenbaum

I had my very first boudoir shoot with the one and only, amazing, fabulous, gorgeous inside and out, Jen Rozenbaum, and I can’t stop smiling! I’ve been admiring her work from afar, so it was a dream come true to be in the studio with her (socially distanced, of course!). I’m a 49 year-old breast cancer thriver, proud Mama of two beautiful teenage girls so why do a boudoir shoot now? I say…WHY NOT? There is never a bad time to do this. And to do it for YOU!

It’s not just about the beautiful photos that you’ll enjoy for years to come. It’s the out-of-body experience that comes with tapping into your inner Goddess when you think that maybe she’s left you. Newsflash. We ALL have that inner Goddess inside of us, and this is a form of therapy. Photo therapy, that is.

Jen has a magical way of making her come out to play. She brings her right back to the surface where she belongs. There is one small price to pay though. Jen will also give you a serious workout. She had me leaning against the wall…in stilettos….legs crossed…shoulders back….chin up….all at the same time! I woke up the next morning and I swear I felt like I ran a marathon. But it was well worth it.

But don’t just take my word for it, try it yourself! If you live in the New York area (or plan to be there at some point soon), I strongly suggest booking an appointment with Jen. Just shoot her a note at JenRozenbaum@gmail.com. Be sure to mention Cancer Fashionista and get $50 off of your photo shoot!

Not only did I have blast shooting with Jen, but I LOVED chatting with her about photography, her guilty pleasures and everything in between!

But first her story:

“I was a stay at home mom in the process of trying to have another baby. After a miscarriage and a subsequent life threatening ectopic pregnancy, I found myself sad, frustrated and very alone. I didn’t want to just wallow in my sadness, so I figured I needed a distraction. That is when I picked up a camera for the first time. I remember it clearly. I placed a glass on my coffee table and took a photo. Then I moved a knob and took another photo and so on. Slowly but surely, I was teaching myself photography. In early 2009 I was invited by a photographer friend to assist her on a boudoir shoot. I happily agreed. What a life-changing day that was. To this day I am not sure I can explain why, but I knew in my bones that boudoir was my calling I immediately started a boudoir photography business out of my bedroom and started feverishly marketing and in my first 2 years of business, I photographed more than 400 women! Spoiler Alert: I also got pregnant with my second child! Through my journey as a boudoir photographer, I have learned so much about women and myself. I learned that we all struggle with problems such as fertility, marriage issues, self-esteem and self-worth, body image issues, etc… Boudoir gave me a platform to start speaking about these topics publicly. Out of that, the #ShamelesslyFeminine® movement was born.”

I’m so grateful that I had the opportunity to meet Jen, as well as work with her. I’m also so proud to call her my friend! Check out our interview below:

Q: What excites you most about boudoir photography?

A: So, I don’t consider myself a photographer. I consider myself a Photogratherapist. Although I am not a true therapist, what I do has a therapeutic aspect to it. That is the part that I love the most. To help women find their power, see their potential…and what they do with that is incredible. I’ve had clients dump boyfriends, get new jobs, start new careers, all because they were reminded of who they really are.

Q: When is the best time in a woman’s life to do a boudoir shoot? So many of us feel we need to have a perfect body, etc.

A: Any. Damn. Time. She. Wants. To. I mean that! I think women should have multiple shoots in their lifetime. A shoot to celebrate a birthday, a triumph, to deal with trauma, to celebrate their body, to commemorate who they are. There are a million good reasons to have a shoot and there is NEVER a need for the “perfect body”. The perfect body is the one you are in RIGHT NOW.

Q: If you could give your “recently diagnosed with breast cancer self” one piece of advice about body positivity, what would it be?

A: Your femininity doesn’t come from your body parts. It’s a mindset.

Q: I think it’s so cool that you’re a Nikon ambassador. Tell us what this is all about, and how it happened?

A: Being asked to become a Nikon Ambassador is one of the greatest moments in my life. There are less than 40 of them in the U.S., so it’s an incredible honor. Nikon approached me shortly after my cancer diagnosis and asked if I wanted to do some work with them. They saw what I was doing to spread the word about my cancer and the positive message I was trying to spread and they wanted to help. Nikon Ambassadors are more than just photographers. They are incredible story tellers and people using their cameras to change the world in many different genres. I am in awe of all of them and often pinch myself that I am a part of such a beautiful and talented group.

Q: What kind of work were you doing pre-Covid? What kind of work are you doing now?

A: Pre-Covid I was shooting a bunch and also traveling the country to teach other photographers how to do what I do. Since all my travel has been cancelled for a while, I took advantage of the time and I wrote a book during quarantine called “What the F*ck Just Happened? A Survivor’s Guide to Life After Breast Cancer.” Although I’m still shooting, I’m also working on developing a program based on the book.

Q: What is the best way to book a boudoir shoot with you, and how far in advance do you need to book a session?

A: Message me! JenRozenbaum@gmail.com. I am currently booking for 2021

Q: Any new projects on the horizon?

A: Definitely stay tuned for my life after cancer program – and my book will be in print hopefully by the New Year.

Q: What is your favorite guilty pleasure?

A: Lately – luxury pajamas win this for me.

Q: If you could hop on a plane and go anywhere in the world, where would it be?

A: Anywhere but here! Hmmm…. if I had to pick one place, I would say Paris.

Q: If you could go to dinner with ANY celebrity, who would it be and why?

To tell you the truth, I’m not that into celebrities – which is weird, I know… but if I had to choose one it would be Reese Witherspoon. I believe she is a powerhouse and is doing amazing things for women and I admire that work.

Thank you Jen for making us all feel beautiful through your incredible photographs and empowering spirit!  We can’t wait to see what you’ll do next!

“Cancerpreneur Spotlight: An Interview with Vicki Barghout, Founder of Viver Joy”

So here we are, in the thick of it. October. Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This year I decided to turn the spotlight onto our “cancerpreneurs,” women who have created products or services as a result of their own breast cancer experiences. I’m so honored to introduce you to Vicki Barghout, the Founder of Viver Joy, a subscription box series curated for women living with cancer and other chronic illnesses.

Vicki is also the co-founder of  Viver Health, a health and wellness company that develops content for patients across a spectrum of disease states. Viver Health translates scientific research into simple, easy-to-understand videos and nutrition and lifestyle guides. These patient-friendly resources are developed utilizing extensive input gathered from patients and medical experts. Viver Health just introduced a guide specifically for metastatic breast cancer which may be ordered here at no charge.

Vicki was diagnosed with breast cancer just one day before giving birth to her second daughter. She attended a retreat held by breast surgeon Dr. Beth DuPree to help manage her new daily stresses and learned how to replace her negative thoughts with positive ones. She placed happy words in a box and her daily mantra became, “Open box, speak positive words, and repeat.”

This sparked the idea for Viver Joy, a progressive gift box subscription series.

Vicki then partnered with Jodi Hutchinson, P.A., an integrative medicine practitioner, to bring her idea to life. Jodi is a physician assistant, recognized master educator and wellness expert with over 37 years of hands-on experience. She has literally walked the world, so she’s applied all of her global knowledge into each and every box.

With Vicki’s background in healthcare and pharma and Jodi’s wellness expertise, the two joined forces to create Viver Joy.

Each box has a healing theme relating back to three of our chakras, building upon the previous one to help completely rebalance the mind and body. This is an ideal gift when you just don’t know what to do for someone going through treatment but want to make them feel special and loved.

I had the pleasure of speaking with Vicki about the creation of Viver Joy, check out our interview below:

Q. What inspired you to create Viver Joy?

A. Ten years ago I was diagnosed with aggressive breast cancer the day before my second daughter was born. During that time, I attended a retreat that truly changed my perspective of the diagnosis. I learned the power of visualization. In order to release negative thoughts, I had to replace them with positive ones. I wrote down the words, “happy, healthy, strong,” and placed them in a pretty box. My daily ritual became this: open box, speak positive words, and repeat. The contents of the box gave me hope and that worn out box from 10 years ago is what inspired Viver Joy, which means to live with joy.  Now 10 years later, I’m thrilled to be able to provide the same hope and joy that I received to so many!

Q. How long ago did you have the initial idea?

A. I’ve been talking about the box for 10 years! We launched in April 2020 in the middle of COVID-19 which marked 10 years since my breast cancer diagnosis.

Q. How did you begin the process of bringing your idea to life?

A. Last August, I created a box for a friend who was diagnosed with breast cancer. Upon receiving the box, she called me with tears of joy saying, “You have to share this with people around the world.” I’m so happy to report that she’s doing well now and I thank her for inspiring me to move forward with the creation of Viver Joy!

Q. What lessons have you learned along the way?

A. Launching during COVID-19 was not easy. Directing our passion and commitment to making a difference in someone’s life keeps us going.

Q. What does it mean to you to be a cancerpreneur? In other words, how has your breast cancer survivorship impacted your career and your Viver Joy endeavor?

A. Ten years ago I was leading an oncology research division at a major pharmaceutical company. I already understood the latest treatment protocols, but I knew that something was still missing. I had two babies at home under the age of two, and I wanted to understand how to stay strong for them both emotionally and physically. I left the corporate world after all my treatment and launched Viver Health to address that void in nutrition and lifestyle. In April we launched Viver Joy. Viver Health is a health and wellness company that develops content for patients across a spectrum of disease states. Viver Health translates scientific research into simple, easy-to-understand videos and nutrition and lifestyle guides.

Q. What advice would you give to another breast cancer thriver who has an idea but is afraid to take the first step?

A. Just do it. Life is short. Ask for help. Follow your dreams.

Q. Who has been your biggest support throughout the process of building your brand? How has he/she been a support to you?

A. My business partner and good friend Jodi Hutchinson has been my rock throughout the years. She pushes me further each day to be a better version of myself both personally and professionally. My husband makes everything possible. He has been the most supportive and loving person throughout this whole journey, without him I could not follow my dream to make a difference in the world. I love him to the moon and back.

Q. Do you think Viver Joy will help other thrivers? If so, how?

A. Yes, we created beautiful boxes to support healing and offer inspiration. The healing theme, color and content of each box has been inspired by the chakras and correspond to specific regions of the body. Each box builds upon the previous box with the goal of rebalancing the mind and body.

Q. Do you have any new/special projects in the works that you’d like to share?

A. We just completed a new Viver Guide, Your Guide to Facing MBC. We had a whole media tour last week as it is the first of its kind!

Q. Tell us something fun about yourself! For example, do you have any interesting hobbies or guilty pleasures? Or perhaps there’s a special dish that you’re known for?

A. I love to garden! My husband and I built a massive garden in our backyard during the pandemic. The garden provided veggies for us all summer long! My green thumb also worked on my orchids this year, as they bloomed 3 times! I am still in disbelief as I could never get an orchid to bloom.

Viver Joy consists of three boxes which may be purchased as a subscription series or individually. The first box is the Life Force Box, intended to help you build a healthier foundation. The second box is called New Vision, which invites to you truly create and connect with yourself. The third box is Powerful You, which encourages you to take charge and empower yourself. They make the perfect gift all year around! It’s just like sending a hug in the mail, which is so important as it’s difficult for us to visit our loved ones these days. The information in the boxes are as impactful as the items themselves. For more information and to make a purchase, please visit ViverJoy.com

Thank you Vicki for creating Viver Joy, we can’t wait to see what you’ll do next!

The Keep A Breast App. Kicking October Off With Prevention!

October is right around the corner, and what better way to kick off Breast Cancer Awareness Month than with a brand new PREVENTION tool?

I’m so proud to introduce to you the Keep A Breast App by The Keep A Breast Foundation.

After a close friend was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2000, designer and artist, Shaney jo Darden, founded the global non-profit organization The Keep A Breast Foundation (KAB) to raise awareness for breast cancer and to encourage prevention and early detection among young people. Now, as KAB celebrates its 20th anniversary, Shaney jo is a leading voice and philanthropy expert in the cultural conversation about breast cancer.

Over the years, she has received many awards for her innovative fusion of advocacy and art. Shaney jo is a certified yoga teacher and breath work enthusiast. Shaney jo is usually accompanied by her 120lb rescue dog Bear Cupcake.

I had the wonderful opportunity to chat with Shaney jo…check out our Q&A below. And be sure to download the app and share with ALL of your friends!

Q) What is Keep A Breast and why did you decide to start this organization?

A) Keep A Breast is a non-profit organization with a mission to empower young people around the world with breast health, education and support. I founded Keep A Breast 20 years ago after a friend was diagnosed with breast cancer. I had no prior comprehension of how early in life breast cancer could strike. It flipped a switch in my brain and I realized that it was my purpose to start this conversation with young people about breast cancer prevention. I wanted to do something that spoke to my peers.

Since the beginning, Keep A Breast has made connections with younger generations about breast health through music, art, skate, and surf culture. We meet young people where they are and we empower them with the education to help them be their own, best advocates.

Q) Tell us about the launch of the new app! What are you most excited about?

A) Yes! The Keep A Breast App is an exciting replacement for our former Check Yourself! App. In the app, you can now schedule your monthly self-check based on your menstrual cycle so you know your “normal,”and learn how a self-check works.

The really exciting addition to this app is if you find something that feels suspicious (like a lump) the app can connect you with our partner Carbon Health for a virtual session so you can be your own health advocate and get a professional opinion asap. Other new features include stories from breast cancer survivors, breast health resources, in-app rewards, and more!

Q) Why did you decide to launch the app? And why now?

A) We’d been planning on updating the app for a bit, so we asked people what they thought was missing from the app, and more of what they wanted to see, and set out to make it happen. We thought our 20th anniversary was the perfect time to give it a refresh and get the message out there that we’re working towards breast health for all. Also, many people don’t feel safe going to hospitals during a global pandemic unless they really have to. This feature helps you know if you really need to see a doctor in person.

Q) Is there a cost to subscribers?

A) The Keep A Breast app is completely free!

Q) What are you hoping to accomplish with the new app?

A) More accessible breast health, prevention, and early detection. When you know your body, and do your self-check every month, you know when something is wrong and you can catch it earlier. Early detection saves lives. Also, partnering with Carbon Health was a huge step for KAB, and the app, to be able to connect people who find a lump, or something not normal for them, with a medical professional who will help them create a plan.

Removing the stigma, and sometimes shame, around loving your breasts is huge for me as well. Do me a favor if you’re reading this, take a moment and look at your breasts and tell them how much you love and appreciate them. Thank them for being there. I want you to know that early detection saves lives and doing your monthly self-check is the best way to know what is normal and not normal for you.

Q) Who are you looking to target with the app? A younger generation?

A) We encourage literally everyone to check themselves, men, women, non-binary, and gender non-conforming folks…everyone! We all have boobies and they need to be checked, and loved. This app can be used by anyone, but yes, our audience is primarily young people because I started KAB when I saw a lack of prevention education and conversations about breast cancer when I was in my 20s.

Q) How are you planning to spread the word about the app?

A) We’ll be spreading the word about the app through our social media channels, our email list, and the community that has supported KAB so unconditionally these last 20 years. We are so lucky to have partners and advocates, like you, who help us empower young people around the world with breast health education and support.

Q) Why do you think it’s so important to have a self breast exam app?

A) Since I started KAB, we’ve always said prevention is the cure and early detection is key. The Keep A Breast app is a home for both of those truths. 40% of people diagnosed with breast cancer find their own lump, and if you know how your body feels, you can catch something early if it arises. The app also connects you with resources to lower your risk of breast cancer in your everyday life.

Q) What is your big dream for the Keep A Breast organization as a whole?

A) Our vision is a world without breast cancer. But until then, our mission is to educate young people about the true risks of cancer, ways of living a healthy, non-toxic lifestyle and the importance of a “self check” to ensure early detection. Right now, we’re making our big dream come true by building a retreat center in the desert for cancer survivors, called the KAB Valley, that will provide the space and tools for visitors to explore and nurture individual and collective wellness.

Q) Tell us a little about yourself! Where are you from? Where did you go to college and what did you study?

A) I’m from San Diego. I grew up in the 80’s and I always wanted to be a fashion designer. My mom taught me how to sew and I made a lot of my own clothes. My aunt had a boutique and I used to make hand painted jeans and hats and sell them to pay for more fabrics and gas. I studied Fashion design at FIDM in Los Angeles and had an amazing career as a denim designer. I’ve lived in New York and San Francisco and have travelled the world but I will always call San Diego my home. I recently moved to Joshua Tree to work on the next big project for Keep A Breast. We are building a wellness center for cancer survivors and their families.

Q) Any interesting hobbies?

A) My hobbies pretty much revolve around self care and healing. I’m a certified yoga teacher and breath work practitioner. I love anything that has to do with keeping a healthy body and spirit. I love hiking, yoga and practicing vegan cooking.

Q) Any fun facts that you’d like to share with us? (Your favorite snack, guilty pleasure, favorite show to binge watch on Netflix, etc)

A) I was on the TV show The Bachelor once! I love telling people this because at first it sounds like a shocker. They did an episode on Keep A Breast where I got to cast all the bachelorettes and the bachelor as part of the show. We all painted them together. It was a cool experience that’s for sure! My favorite show is Queer Eye! It’s all my favorite things wrapped up in one joyous hug of a show. I also have a giant rescue dog. He’s 120 lbs. His name is Bear Cupcake, he sleeps in bed with me and is the coolest guy in the world.

Thank you Shaney jo, for creating the Keep A Breast app and for reminding us about the importance of the breast self-check! We can’t wait to see what you’ll do next….

Lockdown Lipstick. The Best Lip Products To Wear Under Your Mask.

I kept doing it over and over again. I’d apply my lipstick or lip gloss, put my mask on then have the following thoughts:

  • I just ruined the inside of my mask
  • I am going to look like a clown when I remove my mask
  • Why do I keep doing this

Soooo…I did the responsible thing and dove into the world of lip product research. Here are the fruits of my labor. Turns out that matte lipstick as well multi-sticks are the way to fly. Regardless of what kind of product you use, it’s best to blot your lips with a tissue before putting your mask on. Without further adieu…

Ramy said to try his Afterglow Stick, $26. It’s actually great for your eyes, cheeks AND lips. According to Ramy, “It’s everything proof and stays on.”

Are you into metallics? For a matte finish, blot with a tissue after applying. If gloss is your thing, layer on a coat of clear gloss after it’s safe to take off your mask. Thank you Black Radiance for this beauty, and only $5!

Honest Beauty’s Liquid Lipstick is definitely a must-have. It’s vegan as well as matte, and at $14.99 you can play around and try a few different shades.

I had a chat with the lovely Sarah Kelly, Co-Founder of SaltyGirl Beauty and she said, “I wear all of our lipglosses under my mask. It doesn’t smudge, but some color will wipe off onto your mask. Our Jamie gloss ($18)has more of a matte feel, and works very well if you blot your lips before putting your mask on.”

Now, if you’re in the mood to treat yourself (or maybe you have a Sephora gift card that you just haven’t used yet), and you prefer something sheer, I’d say go ahead and try  Gucci’s Rouge à Lèvres Voile Sheer Lipstick under your mask. The “Marina” shade is shown below, a gorgeous hue of violet that I think is just perfect for the upcoming fall season.  A bit of a splurge for $42 at Sephora but the floral packaging is pretty sweet…..

If you’re like me and need a Target fix once in a while, check out the L’Oreal Paris Rouge Signature Lip Stain.  This matte stain has gotten great reviews because it gives you that super-pigmented color that doesn’t transfer. And if you haven’t worn red before….go for it! I say go bold or go home. It will be the best $10 you ever spent.

I Took A Cleopatra Milk Bath. And It Was Dope.

I kept seeing these beautiful milk bath photos on Instagram, so I thought I’d give it a try. But first, a little history lesson.

Turns out that milk baths have been around for centuries. In fact, Cleopatra was famous for bathing in milk to improve the texture of her skin. So basically, milk is really good for your skin.

Here are some benefits:

  • Milk is nourishing, since it contains proteins, fats, vitamins and minerals
  • Milk baths are even good for minor skin irritations such as poison ivy and sunburns
  • The lactic acid in milk helps to exfoliate your skin and can smooth out dry, rough patches

What kind of milk should you bathe in?

After noodling around online, it seems the best choice is goat milk since it’s high in fat and offers up strong soothing properties. But honestly you can use ANY kind of milk. Cow’s milk is the most commonly used, and whole milk is going to be the most beneficial. Coconut milk, buttermilk, or soy or rice milk will also do the trick. You can also used powdered milk.

I used organic whole milk from Trader Joe’s because it was just easy to grab when I was there last weekend, during my weekly food shopping extravaganza.

The Cleopatra Milk Bath Recipe

What You’ll Need:

2 cups of milk (powdered or regular)
1/2 ounce lavender essential oil or any other fragrance you prefer
1 cup Epsom salts
1 cup sea salt
1/2 cup baking soda

Flowers are optional but I would totally add them! Just grab a bouquet or two of your favorite type, and cut them leaving about 1″ of stem so they float. So much fun and they look sooo pretty!

I also added some Eco Bee Farms raw Manuka honey to my bath which made it super luxurious.

How to Make It:
– Measure out the milk into a large, wide bowl
– Add the Epsom and sea salts along with the baking soda and mix everything together well, making sure to break up any clumps
– Add the fragrance or essential oil. Lavender is a favorite in bath blends, but honey, almond, vanilla, mint, rose and other flowery and fruity fragrances also are delish
– Mix everything together well
– Scoop the milk mixture into jars or other air-tight containers
– For your bath, add a half cup or so to briskly running bath water and enjoy a soothing soak
– Feel free to play around with the type of salts and fragrances to make it your own

I totally had a “fancy moment” with the bowls by the way. Love this amazing, gorgeous vintage yellow Tiffany bowl by Elsa Peretti which was given to me as a gift

I also added something a little extra to my special bath….just a few drops of Ami’s “Pure” herbal oil with 500mg of activated hemp extract for an extra relaxing effect

The fruits of my labor! I’ve gotta tell you….it’s WORTH IT! Allow 30-40 minutes to just slip into this amazing bath. The results? Smooth skin and pure relaxation.  See how happy I look?! This can be you! Especially since we’re stuck at home, why not create your own little slice of heaven……just like Cleopatra did.

I Asked 8 Amazing Breast Cancer Thrivers To Share Their Newly Discovered Pandemic Hobbies And This Is What Happened….

Lately I’ve been wondering what else I can do to find a sense of peace and joy these days. My new “oxygen” is spending as much time as possible being outside. I go on early morning hikes every other day with my dear friend Emme. We found this amazing trail just 5 minutes from my house and it’s really the ultimate escape! We even go when it’s raining. The trees form a canopy so we don’t get wet, and the sound of the rain drops trickling all the way down through the forest is just so…..Zen!

I also love doing outdoor activities with my daughters, Maya and Erica. Just recently Erica and I packed a picnic lunch and went over to the Nyack Beach State Park, about 20 minutes away from us. We hiked a bit, then settled in right at the water’s edge for our picnic. We could practically touch the Tappan Zee bridge, it was so cool! After we ate, we just chilled out on our picnic blanket and looked at the sky. Sometimes it’s the simplest things that bring us the most joy and serenity.

But what else is out there? Well, I asked some of the amazing ladies in our community to weigh in and let us know what they’ve been up to. And I’ve gotta tell you, I’m feeling really INSPIRED! From watercolor painting and playing the piano to dancing  and needlepointing….by the time you’re done reading this,  you’re going to want to try at least one of them! Check these out and you might even consider taking one of these up as a new hobby…..

“I picked up watercolors during chemo. An art therapist asked me if I wanted to sit in a quiet art room while I waited for my infusion. I said yes. And she taught me a thing or two about watercolor paint.I always knew I appreciated the arts but never thought of myself as an artist before. I am so glad I found watercolor painting because it seriously helps keep my mind calm, passes the time, and as an added bonus, it helps me imagine places I haven’t been to yet, but hopefully will get to once we can all travel again. I’d recommend it to anyone! Art heals. For reals.”

– Andi Oller @andioller

“I love playing piano, whether it is a Broadway tune like Chorus Line’s “What I did for love” or serious classical music  from Rachmaninoff or Haydn. I play every night after I finish my work. It allays my anxiety. Often, I post videos of my piano playing on my social media accounts. People need some calmness in their lives.”

– Anne D’Innocenzio @adinnocenzio

“I picked up needlepoint to help me feel sane during the great pause. I’ve been longing for a hobby that was outside of work and found an amazing creator on Etsy that had beautiful patterns – so I dove right in. At night I commit to one strain of yarn, sometimes I get two…but it’s enough to distract me from my crazy day and unwind while still being creative.”

– Dana Donofree, Founder of AnaOno Intimates

@daynadono @anaonointimates

“In the midst of these uncertain times it’s easy to get overwhelmed and anxious. I know for me it definitely has triggered some PTSD from cancer as I navigate through COVID. I’ve been so grateful for the intentional and unintentional pockets of joy in the midst of the crazy. Fitness has always been a huge tool of stress relief and those endorphins can lift my mood every time! The feeling of thanking my body for the good that it does and appreciating its strength helps me come back to my blessings. Also reaching out to my friends and breasties has brought laughter and comfort! Lastly but not least, my faith has anchored me when the storms of life seems too much to bear. Reach out if you need help during these times, find joy in your body and what it can do, and I hope you have some faith to hold you tight in the storms!” ?

“Quarantine allowed me to discover some new passions and to fall back in love with old passions. I was able to go to the dance studio with one of my best friends to teach virtually. We became very close and it allowed me to get back in shape. It is time I was so grateful for and almost wished it didn’t come to an end. A new passion of mine is baking bread. It was something that I was also scared of doing because it takes a lot of time and precision. I loved it and really enjoyed the results. The other thing I did during quarantine was virtual bingo and virtual happy hour. It was nice to talk with family and friends and look forward to something that day.”

– Maggie Kudirka @baldballerina

“During Covid what has kept my sanity is making time for doses of nature. The nature I was able to experience in Central Park and nature in the Hamptons. Nature is calming to me. It helps me get centered and think clearly.“

– Christina Wilson @christinasnyc

“During these pandemic times I’ve found that getting outside to enjoy the beauty of nature whether it’s going for a daily walk or getting out on the water have been calming for me. There’s nothing better than cozying up with my cup of coffee, a good book, and working on my summer tan. It’s been a great way to decompress and being on the water is good for the soul.”

– Christy Greenleaf @christy_topher_greenleaf

“I used my sewing skills to make Get One, Give One face masks — each purchase also donates one in need to someone on the COVID-19 frontline, including medical staff, essential workers or cancer patients in active treatment. It’s helped me to help others and feel like I’m giving back in some small way.I also try to get outside as often as I can…MASK ON, of course! ?”

– Rachel Park @survivormoda.rachel

Thank you to all who participated, and for giving us a serious dose of inspiration as well as some new hobbies to try! Stay safe out there and be well. XO

I Am Over The Moon…For Mona Moon Naturals!

Every so often I come across a new brand that I LOVE and can’t wait to share with all of you!

Mona Moon Naturals was created by Mona Samaan-Ockenden and inspired by her sister’s cancer diagnosis. Mona’s family made a choice to eliminate many products from her home and began using safer, more natural and chemical-free products, including deodorant.

“After trying several products, I was introduced to a DIY deodorant paste from a mom at my son’s school and it worked great! I began making and modifying the recipe for my own use.” Mona soon had close friends asking for the product, and it was then that Mona Moon Naturals was born.

Mona Moon Naturals deodorant is a paste you apply with your fingers. While applying, take a few extra seconds to check for lumps and bumps under your arms and your breasts. Know your body. Early detection may save your life!

10% of your purchase supports the Breast Cancer Coalition of Rochester and their mission to support those touched by breast or gynecological cancers. Please visit bccr.org to learn more.

So let’s get down to it, here are her amazing products!

The Basic Deodorant Paste is made of coconut oil, baking soda, arrowroot powder, beeswax and lavender and lemon essential oils (if scented). That’s it! Just apply a small amount of paste under your arms to keep you feeling fresh as a daisy all day long.  When making the switch to natural deodorant, it may take a few weeks to get used to it.  Price: $12

Note: Both the Basic and Sensitive Deodorant Pastes do contain some baking soda which can be abrasive, and some sensitive users do develop a rash. When you sweat, the arrowroot powder and baking soda may leave a chalky white residue on your clothing that should wash right out. Please note that this is a deodorant and it will not stop you from sweating (it is important to sweat and eliminate toxins from your body).

The Lip Balm is a yummy combo of oils, butters, beeswax and essential oils that create a wonderfully hydrating product that will keep your lips moist and repair damage every time you apply. Did I mention that ALL of Mona Moon’s product are handmade? Well, they sure are!  Price: $5

I have two words for you….Body Whip! OMG this is an amazing combination of shea butter, mango butter, coconut oil and sweet almond oil which hydrates and nourishes your skin. It’s best to apply after a warm bath or shower when your skin is still moist.  A little goes a long way. You will see the whip melt as it comes into contact with your skin so allow the oils to absorb into your skin. Many have had wonderful results applying on their face. It helps to repair skin, reduce the appearance of fine lines, hydrate and add elasticity.  It is lightly scented with rose and geranium essential oils. Available in 2oz, 40z and 90z.

Now I’d love to introduce you to Mona. Check out the fun interview I had with her this week!

What inspired you to create Mona Moon Naturals?

In late 2015, my sister was diagnosed with breast cancer and as we began to learn more about “how and why”, we learned about all of the chemicals that are used in our skin products, cleaning products, plastic containers, etc. that may cause illnesses such as cancers. We began swapping products and I was having a really hard time finding a deodorant that worked for my body.  A mom at my son’s school had shared some product and a her recipe that worked so I began to make and modify it for my use.  Within a year there were about 10 family members and friends using the deodorant. It was great because I would get feedback on each recipe and perfect it from there.

What kind of work did you do prior to Mona Moon Naturals?

I have two technical degrees – AAS in Architecture and Construction and a BS in Civil Engineering Technology. I spent 19 years at an engineering firm and 5 years at a boutique firm focused on telecommunications and utilizes.  The majority of my career was spent in business development and operations.

You make all of your products yourself. Explain the process, how it works and how you decided which ingredient to use.

My husband built a separate production kitchen and space for MMN.  With regards to ingredients, it has always started with a variety of recipes and then a group of testers. Based on the feedback – how does it make you feel, how are the scents, does it leave residue, how often are you applying, are you having any skin reactions, please share pics, etc, I will modify and send another test batch out.  Depending on the feedback, I select different ingredients or modify amounts.

What advice can you give to other entrepreneurs out there who have an idea, but are afraid to go for it?

If it brings you joy, just do it.  Life is too short.  If you have a product, first prove that it works and that it will sell. Know your worth; do your research and know what similar products are sold for. Know what it costs for you to make it, and if you’re planning to sell retail, be sure to understand what the retailers will be willing to pay. Have your tribe of mentors who will guide you, cheer for you and remind you why you started your journey when days are tough!

When did you first launch?

March 2019 we launched our website and I was in 2 local boutiques.

Describe your products and how/when to use each of them

Deodorant Paste – Use it daily as needed.  Using the guitar pic included in the container, scrape off about a pea size of deodorant and place it on your fingers, then rub under your arms.  If you have anything left on your fingers, rub it anywhere on your body – it’s all natural and good for your skin. Our hashtag is #pastewithpurpose. As you are applying under your arms, check for any lumps or bumps.  Also take some time to check your breasts.

Lip Balm –The combination of the oils, butters, beeswax and essential oils creates a wonderfully hydrating product that will keep your lips moist and repair damage every time you apply.

Body Whip –  An amazing combination of shea butter, mango butter, coconut oil and sweet almond oil hydrates and nourishes your skin. It’s best to apply after a warm bath or shower when your skin is still moist.  A little goes a long way.  You will see the whip melt as it comes into contact with your skin so allow the oils to absorb into your skin.  Many have had wonderful results applying on their face. It helps to repair your skin, reduces the appearance of fine lines, hydrates and adds elasticity

What separates your products from others currently in the market?

Our products are handmade in small batches with all natural ingredients. That being said, they have a shelf life with an expiration date. I want our customers to be able to read all of our ingredients and not have to wonder what it is and if they are safe.   With regards to our deodorant paste, I believe our message #pastewithpurpose is why this journey began.  Take time to know and check your body. It’s so important to be your own advocate.

What do you like to do for fun?

I love to be outdoors exploring– walking, hiking, running. Experimenting in the kitchen and spending time with my family.

Where are you from? Anything you’d like to share about your home town?

Rochester NY. Where Kodak was founded and home of the famous Garbage Plate.

Favorite ice cream flavor

Any kind of sorbet.

Favorite NetFlix show and why?

So I have two.  When I want to laugh, Grace & Frankie. I love seeing 2 women living their best lives and nothing stopping them. When I want to learn, The Crown. After various events portrayed on the series, I find myself online researching and learning more, I really enjoy it.

Your favorite book and why?

Yes you can all laugh at me.  I am a Harry Potter junkie. I can’t tell you how many times have watched, read and listened to the series. And every time I learn something new!

Anything else you’d like to share about yourself?

I love challenges and solving problems.

Thank you Mona for sharing all of these fun facts about yourself, as well as Mona Moon Naturals! We can’t wait to see what you’ll do next….

Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About Chemotherapy Induced Hair Loss…But Were Afraid To Ask

I recently had the pleasure of chatting with Lisa Caddy, Consultant Trichologist (hair and scalp expert) of Philip Kingsley, a trichological hair care brand with hair and scalp clinics in both London and New York City.

We first met at the NYC clinic back in February, and just this week we had a GREAT Instagram Live and talked about EVERYTHING that you ever wanted to know about chemotherapy and hair loss….but were afraid to ask.

Just in case you missed it, here’s a recap of our conversation. Lisa, thanks so much for speaking with us!

Q: What are steps that one can take to prepare their hair and scalp for hair loss due to chemotherapy, prior to treatment starting?

A: Chemotherapy induced hair loss can may be inevitable for many and unfortunately can’t really be prevented. However, its good to make sure your scalp is healthy prior to treatment which means dealing with any dandruff or problematic scalps. If you do suffer from dandruff or other flaking scalp condition then try our Philip Kingsley Flaky Itchy Scalp Shampoo to improve your scalp and ensure you have a healthier scalp environment. Maximizing your diet can give your hair a boost  before treatment which means it has the optimal chance of recovery. Its important to eat a protein rich diet, include complex carbohydrates and if you’re a woman who is menstruating, iron is also a key mineral. Iron is plentiful in red meat and so if you’re not on a plant based diet its good to include this twice weekly.

Q: How is diet/nutrition/hydration connected to hair and scalp hair?

A: We know how important it is to keep our body hydrated in order to benefit our facial skin, the same goes for the scalp. Making sure we drink enough water can hydrate our scalp too and help to prevent it from drying out. Our hair cells are the second fastest dividing cells in the body and hairs nutritional requirements are quite unique. The hair is never prioritized when it comes to food which means it’s at the ‘back of the queue’ and is considered a ‘non-essential’ tissue. Therefore maximizing our diet, eating ‘smarter’ which means choosing foods with the most nutritional value is key. For example, if you want a snack between meals (which is recommended) then you’re better choosing a handful of almonds than a bag of chips! Meal skipping is also a ‘no no’ for those concerned with their hair. You should also make sure you eat adequate calories and have a very inclusive diet to ensure you get the most value from your meals.

Q: How soon after your hair grows back can you begin to color it?

A: Once the hair is around 3 inches long (which might take about 6 months) you can begin to consider coloring your hair again. It is important; however, that your scalp is comfortable. Make sure that there is no soreness, itching or discomfort and it feels healthy. Its important to discuss with your hairdresser that you have had chemotherapy to ensure that extra care is taken. The hair may be much finer than before treatment, so this may mean it is weaker and needs more careful handling. A patch test is always recommended as the scalp may have become more sensitive.

Q: Is there anything you can do to make your hair go back to normal faster post-chemotherapy? For example, if your hair becomes coarse and curly.

A: Hair usually regrows normally in time for most people who have undergone chemotherapy. You can’t speed up hair growth, but you can make sure things are in place for when hair is ready to grow. Making sure your iron levels are good is so important as if you are deficient in iron (or even just have levels a little on the low side) this can really hinder your hair regrowth.  Also vitamin B12, Vitamin D and zinc are vital for hair cell renewal and so either have a blood test to make sure you’re not deficient or take a good hair supplement. Our Philip Kingsley Tricho Complex was formulated by us as Trichologists and contains all the vitamin and minerals in all the right quantities that hair relies on. It’s very common for hair to be a different texture post-chemo. It may come back curly when it used to be straight. It’s thought that the chemo drug changes the hair follicle temporarily. This should return to normal within around 12 months.

Q: What should you avoid doing to your hair/scalp when you’re undergoing chemotherapy?

A: Chemical processes, such as coloring or perming, should never be undertaken during treatment. It is not recommended to massage oils into the scalp, even if it feels dry as this can cause a contact dermatitis or irritation at the least. If you have lost a significant amount if your hair then your scalp will be more exposed. Its important to cover your scalp when you’re outside in sunlight to prevent sunburn and skin damage.

Q: How can you maintain good scalp health for optimal regrowth?

A:  First of all, the scalp is the bedrock of hair growth therefore a clean and healthy scalp = a healthier head of hair. Frequent shampooing, even if you have lost all or most of your hair is still important. Daily shampooing is good as this cleanses away dead skin cells, bacteria, sweat and pollution which provides a healthier scalp environment. Just make sure you use something gentle and mild.

Q:  Which PK products are best to use on your scalp when you have no hair, and how often should you use them?

A: Philip Kingsley’s No Scent No Colour Gentle Shampoo (and conditioner if you have not lost all your hair) is gentle for delicate scalps. It is free from color, fragrance, sulfates and parabens. You don’t need a complicated routine, just gentle formulas which are kind to the skin.

Q:  Which PK products are best to use once your hair starts to grow back?

A: Hair almost always regrows following chemotherapy, so you don’t need to use anything special to make sure this happens. However, if you feel you want to do something to optimize this growth you can. Keep your routine simple and when your scalp is comfortable, treatment is finished and hair is starting to regrow, you can use our Stimulating Weekly Scalp Mask, which optimizes scalp health. If your scalp is itchy or flaky, then the Philip Kingsley Flaky Itchy Scalp Toner is extremely soothing and cooling.

Q: How do you know if you need to see a trichologist, and what is the best way to find one in your area?

A: If your hair is not returning to normal, if it’s brittle and breaking or your scalp remains uncomfortable, then it’s wise to seek out a Trichologist. I’ve provided a link here to the International Association of Trichologists where you can locate someone qualified and registered near to you.

https://www.iattrichology.com/locate-a-trichologist

Q: How do you determine what kind of hair loss you have?

A: There are many hair loss conditions and numerous causes and so it can be difficult to self diagnose. The 2 most common hair loss conditions I see as a Trichologist are Pattern Hair Loss (male and female) sometimes called ‘hair thinning’, its Trichological name is Androgenetic Alopecia. This is a genetic condition where the hair follicles to the top area of the scalp become miniaturized and produce finer and shorter hairs over time. This results in the scalp becoming more visible in this area and often the parting appearing wider. This is a progressive condition which needs treatment to slow it down.

The other very common hair loss condition is excessive hair shedding, otherwise known as Telogen effluvium. This is when you are seeing an abnormal amount of hair fall when you shampoo or handle your hair. This is a temporary condition and can be caused by several factors. Thyroid dysfunction and nutritional status are the most common causes but also sickness, a fever and even Covid-19 can trigger it too. Blood tests are often advised to check the thyroid and also for iron levels and other common nutritional levels such as vitamin B12, zinc and vitamin D. once the cause is identified and corrected the hair shedding should stabilize and regrow.

Wow! Thank you Lisa for all of your expertise and insights! I hope we meet again soon!

Baby, It’s Hot Outside! The Ultimate Guide To Keeping Your Cool During Chemo This Summer

Baby, it’s hot outside but no worries. I can help you keep your cool!  I remember going to my chemo treatments in August in New York City and for anyone that doesn’t know, August in NYC is HOT, HOT, HOT!!

I recall feeling super uncomfortable not only because of the rising temperatures, but because of the effect that chemotherapy was having on my body. I was fatigued to begin with, so getting overheated, coupled with the side effects of treatment, just made it worse.  I tried so many ways to help myself beat the heat until I found a few things that I simply could not live without!

I went through treatment seven years ago, so I updated my go-to list with some new fabulous products, tips and tricks that you’re going to LOVE.  All of which will help you keep your cool when undergoing chemotherapy in the summer!  Here we go, the COOLEST must-haves that money can buy:

A Lightweight Dress
Nobody does it better than Urban Outfitters. This sweet tiered ruffle Maxi Dress by UO Paolo is only $79, a great price for such a timeless piece. It’s very chic and feminine, but also lightweight, airy and has adjustable spaghetti straps so you can find the perfect fit no matter where you are in your breast cancer journey.

A Portable Fan
I am loving this Richoose handheld portable fan, available on Amazon for only $12.99.  It gets its power supply from USB devices such as your laptop or a power bank, so you’ll never run out of batteries. It’s especially handy for those of us that are on foot and live in a large city.  Just toss it in your bag and keep your cool no matter where you are. It’s also ideal for socially distant visits with friends when you need to be outside…but don’t want to lose your cool.

A Cooling Spray
Check out this Art Naturals Mineral Water Cooling Spray, $15. It’s purified mineral water infused with skin-soothing aloe and complexion-cooling cucumber extracts to revive and rejuvenate a tired, dull complexion…which we all know can be a direct result of chemo. Keep it in the fridge and give your face a refreshing “spritz” for instant relief after you’ve been outside or if you’re having hot flashes in the middle of the night.

Keep A Cool Head
Style Esteem is synonymous with head wraps that make you feel like the QUEEN that you are! Let me tell you, wearing a wig in the middle of the hot, hot summer is no picnic. Which is why you need an alternative. This peach-dream-wrap ($33) will help you to keep your head cool without sacrificing style. It’s one size fits all, and is made with a soft yet stretchy cotton blend. Every order is sent in a stylish, breathable case for easy storage at home or on-the-go, no matter where life takes you.

Take a Cool Bath
I’m a true bath lover, and on hot days taking a hot bath doesn’t seem so enticing. However, if you run your bath using cool water and add a peppermint bath salt like the one from SaltyGirl Beauty…..voila! You’ve got a cool summer oasis right in your own bathroom. Just enter code CF2020 at checkout to get 10% off! You’re welcome!

The Coolest Cami In Town
After running around for all of your doctor appointments in the heat, there’s nothing better than going home and putting on something that is just like a second skin. And in my opinion, there’s nothing better than a great cami.  This gorgeous wire-free wrap camisole from AnaOno Intimates is one of my all times faves! Made with super-soft, smooth modal material, and BREATHABLE stretch lace, this cami makes you feel pretty (and cool) even the hottest summer days. The V-neck style of the wrap front also looks lovely on any shape, no matter your breast surgery. Use Code CF2020 at checkout to get 20% off!

Hydration is Key
Last, but not certainly least….ladies, please don’t forget to hydrate! There are a million reasons why we need plenty of water, especially during the summer and most certainly during chemo. I found this water bottle by Rifle Paper Co on Vogue.com, and just thought it was SO pretty! Plus it keeps your water super cold for hours. Cheers!
